When the summer nights start getting longer, the Scottish weather generally starts to improve and with the amazing weather we had this weekend there is usually a common question that is asked when deciding on a place to go for some drinks….. “Does it have a beer garden?” When talking about WEST the answer is most definitely yes and in my opinion the best one in Glasgow.
Most bars in town have to make do with a couple of tables and chairs located outside on the street and you will be very lucky to first of all manage to get a seat and secondly to see a blade of grass.
WEST is entirely different. Located at the Templeton building at Glasgow Green, it is fortunate to not be short of space and features over a dozen picnic tables and if they are all taken, don’t, worry just sit on the grass and enjoy your cold one! With the building being sat quite a distance back from the road it also avoids any of the traffic noise so you really can chill out in the sun and look over Glasgow’s oldest park.
The beer garden is not the only thing going for WEST, as a microbrewery it actually produces its own range of beers and they are the first brewery in the UK to produce all of its beers in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot. I usually drink the hefewiezen which is a gorgeous wheaty beer. A full run down of their other beers can be found on their website.
You don’t have to just be a beer drinker to enjoy what WEST has to offer as they share the same enthusiasm for food as they do for their beer. The menu is a mixture of local Scottish produce along with German classics like steak and dunkel pie and the kitchen also usually rustles up a few specials each day to vary the menu.
I always find the staff here really helpful and friendly but the only thing I always wonder is why is the bar so deep? Have a look next time you visit and you will see what I mean… maybe it’s a German thing?
