When I moved to Glasgow, I was delighted to discover that there are a number of vegan/vegetarian cafés. As a vegetarian, I often struggle to find things to eat when I go out, especially since I refuse to eat mushrooms. Veggie places are a novelty – suddenly, I can eat every (mushroom-free) item on the menu!
The 13th Note is not only a vegan/vegetarian café, but also a pub and music venue. Most of their food is vegan, though the vegetarian options are clearly marked with a ‘V’ on the menu.

On my last visit I ordered the mezethes platter, which has humous, falafel, tzatiki, couscous, warm flatbread and salad. The meal was tasty and surprisingly filling, but the most impressive part was the homemade salad dressing the waiter brought out with our food. When cafés say that something comes with salad, they usually mean a pile of limp lettuce with a slice of tomato on it and no dressing. The slightly bitter mustard vinaigrette was a pleasant surprise.

Though my husband is a proud carnivore, he was similarly impressed with his potato cakes filled with mushrooms, spinach and peas and covered in a roasted red pepper sauce. His only complaint? That he could have eaten a third one.
