Introduction to Cake Decorating Class

Sugarcraft is something I’ve always wanted to try out.  Peggy Porschen’s amazing cakes have always inspired me to step into the world of cake decorating and recently I finally decided to something about it!  A friend recommended a small cake supplies shop called Barracks Cake shop that hold evening classes for beginners and when I heard they were starting a new intake of ‘Introduction to Cake Decorating’ for a four week block, I jumped at the chance to get signed up.

The four week course has covered so many skills in cake decorating and I really feel like I’ve learned a lot.  I would definitely recommend this class.  It’s so much fun and you’ve got something to take away at the end of it to show off your new-found skills!

Here’s how my cake developed over the weeks…

Week 1 – Covering the cake with marzipan.

Week 1 – Covering the cake and board with icing.

Week 1 – Adding ribbon to the cake.

Week 2 – Practicing piping royal icing onto the boards (we spent this week experimenting and we didn’t add any to the cake).

Week 3 – Practicing making model people and bears (again I didn’t add my models to the cake).

Week 4 – Cut out shapes, glitter and paint and choose pieces to put on cake.

Rebecca, you could try the met college in Glasgow as they do lots of cake decorating classes but I think they fill up very quickly and have a large waiting list. Good luck with the cakes!

THE BEST PLACE to go for a cake decorating course is
MOTHERWELL COLLEGE…..Where the lecturers you will have helping you along the way will be either ANN BROWN and JIM MULLEN both of whom are MULTI GOLD MEDALISTS in both in their own right and with the culinary OLYMPIC TEAM. Their creations are beyond belief and have to be seen to be believed. AND DOESNT COST a FORTUNE.
