Recently I met friends for a mid-week dinner in the city centre and as always we were looking for a little bit of a bargain. After a wee bit of searching online we discovered that Hummingbird on Bath Street was doing 2 for 1 burgers during the week, so we’d thought we’d give a try.
Firstly I have to say if I was rating solely on style, I would be rating pretty highly, as I like it’s quirkiness and the little things they did just a bit different that caught my attention i.e. their menu, the style of the venue and how they presented me with my bill, small things, but they caught my attention.
The menu was the first thing to catch my eye, it was presented as tracing paper on a clip board and so I spent more time admiring that than choosing my dinner in the first instance. The menu is mostly made up of different types of burgers: “cow burgers, sheep burgers, bird burgers and burgers from another mother…” there are a few other things to choose from but its basically a burger menu. Having admired the menu and the general ‘cut of their jib’, I did start to wonder if it would be a little bit of style over function and awaited my burger to arrive before I made judgement on that.
I ordered the Ultimate Bird Burger (pictured above) which was essentially chicken breast with grilled cheese, bacon and all the trimmings. What I didn’t get is why you had to order chips to go with your burger, this I thought would be a given, but not here as its an addition to the meal. However it wasn’t until my burger arrived when I thought “Hmmmm might not need those chips after all”, as the burger was huge! and most importantly very very tasty! And the chips were not bad either but I never finished them.
For a bargain yet quality burger I would highly recommend, you can’t really go wrong with their 2 for 1 offer. Contrary to other reviews I’ve read I found the bar/waiting staff very friendly but then I was in mid-week for a bite to eat, I wasn’t clubbing at the weekend and waiting for a cocktail order, which I hear they do well but you do have a wait a little for them.

And who can grumble when you get a good gourmet burger offer and the bill is presented to you in an old fashioned book filled with some retro drumstick lollies and refreshers, that made me smile, despite the fact they were presenting me with the bill. And considering I was dining with members of my book group we all found it a very apt method of presenting your bill…..as I said, it’s the little things!
So if you like a burger and looking for quality as well as good value I would certainly take advantage of the burgers at Hummingbird.
Their 2 for 1 offer runs all day Sunday-Thursday and from noon til 6pm on a Friday and Saturday.
